Is Jay Leno living on the edge?

NEW YORK — If it was measured in traditional TV terms, “The Jay Leno Show” wouldn’t be long for this world.

NBC’s bold experiment faltered in the third week of television’s new season. None of its five editions scored higher than No. 60 in the Nielsen Co.’s ranking of the most popular programs. All of CBS’ dramas at 10 p.m. had more than twice as many viewers as Leno’s show.

NBC says Leno’s show must be viewed over the long haul. The show is cheaper to produce than scripted programs, but it’s unclear whether those savings will compensate for the low ratings.

CBS’ “NCIS” was again the most popular prime-time show of the week.
