Nigerian president treated for heart condition

ABUJA, Nigeria — The chief physician for Nigeria’s president says the leader is undergoing treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua was flown to Saudi Arabia and admitted to a hospital in the western seaport city of Jiddah on Tuesday.

Salisu Banye, the president’s personal physician, released a statement Thursday saying the president suffered from acute pericarditis, an inflammatory condition of the sac surrounding the heart.

Banye said Yar’Adua is now receiving treatment and is responding well. The president had complained of chest pain last week.

Yar’Adua, who has long been known to suffer from a kidney ailment, reportedly spent a lengthy stint at a Jiddah hospital last year.
