Main Paris museums closed due to strike
PARIS — Some of the French capital’s most important museums, including the Louvre, the Pompidou Center and the Musee d’Orsay, are closed because of a strike.
Strikers are upset about a government policy not to replace half of retiring public servants.
The work stoppage began at the Pompidou modern art museum Nov. 23. Unions had warned earlier this week that the strike could spread.
Employees at the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay said workers at both voted Wednesday in favor of a strike, which took effect immediately. Strikers hold assemblies each morning to vote on whether to prolong the strike by 24 hours.
France is the world’s top tourist destination. Its museums attract thousands of visitors daily.
