Geithner seeks to reassure global investors
BEIJING — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the Obama administration is committed to doing everything possible to maintain investor confidence in U.S. financial markets.
Geithner, wrapping up two days of talks with Chinese leaders, said in an interview on Chinese state television Tuesday that he believed Chinese officials had a lot of confidence in the strength and resilience of the U.S. economy.
He said the Chinese government understood that the steps the Obama administration has taken to bolster the economy would cause the U.S. budget deficit to rise temporarily. But he said the administration was committed to getting control of the deficits over time. China is the largest investor in U.S. Treasury securities.
