Official: Explosion at Utah Air Force base
HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — An official with the Davis County sheriff’s office in northern Utah says there has been an explosion at Hill Air Force Base.
Capt. Kenny Payne says the explosion occurred Thursday at a weapons cache. He did not have other details.
The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reports that power at the base was knocked out. Aerial photos on KSL-TV showed an area of blackened grass and two emergency vehicles at the scene.
Payne says the office got a request for assistance with traffic control at the base. He says the base’s gate on the west side in Clearfield, about 27 miles south from Salt Lake City, has been shut down and traffic was being diverted to the south gate.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Cameron Roden says Interstate 15 is closed in both directions for a stretch between Sunset and Roy near the base.
Officials at Hill Air Force Base did not return messages.
