Auto suppliers urge lawmakers to protect base

WASHINGTON — Auto suppliers say the auto industry’s supply base could be threatened by factory shutdowns by General Motors and Chrysler.

In a letter to congressional offices on Friday, the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association said the supplier industry is in crisis and during the shutdowns many suppliers will have no choice but to permanently close their facilities this summer.

The trade group is urging Congress and the Obama administration to provide direct financial assistance to parts suppliers. They say a support program started by the Treasury Department earlier this year targets only large suppliers to GM and Chrysler.

Chrysler is in bankruptcy and General Motors has announced plant closings and shutdowns this summer.
