NEW DELHI - The sweltering heatwave has forced the Delhi government to extend summer vacation of schools by one more week in the national capital.

The schools will now re-open July 7, the government announced Thursday.

A heat wave condition prevails in Delhi and we have decided to extend the summer vacation for a week. We have issued orders for government and private schools to open July 7, Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely told reporters here.

The national capital has been reeling under intense heat with maximum temperature hovering over 40 degrees Celsius for the past few days. The city’s misery has only been compounded by acute water and power shortages.
