Donations to Mass. league cover theft, new storage
LAWRENCE, Mass. — A Massachusetts youth baseball league that had $1,500 worth of equipment stolen before the season started has received so many donations that it can replace the equipment and build a more secure storage area.
The theft of bats, balls, helmets, cleats and other equipment from a South Lawrence East Little League storage pod was reported last week. Donations poured in from across the country, including one from former major leaguer Mo Vaughn.
George Herman, the league’s president, tells The Eagle-Tribune that the league replaced the stolen equipment and has $11,000 left over. It hopes to construct a building with storage, restrooms and a concessions stand.
The league serves about 300 mostly low-income children. There have been no arrests.
