San Francisco Bay Bridge Cable Snap

mn-bridge28_023__0500771088500x296San Francisco’s Bay Bridge is closed for an indefinite period following a horrible mishap.A newly renovated portion of the bridge was badly hit by a cable and two rods about 5.30 p.m,Tuesday.The cable snapped on the westbound upper deck, hitting at least one vehicle and snarling rush-hour traffic.

One person was shaken up and at last one vehicle damaged in the incident.

Authorities are closing down both directions of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge for at least 24 hours so that the engineers could inspect the damage and repair the broken cable by the evening,according to Peter Van Eckhardt, California Highway Patrol Officer.

The 73-year-old Bay Bridge connects the cities of San Francisco and Oakland in California. The bridge, is a California landmark that carries about 260,000 vehicles a day,according to AP.

Transport officials began preparing contingency plans and Caltrans engineers were checking the structural integrity of the bridge, according to SF Chronicle.

Heavy winds are cited as the cause of the cable snap and Falling debris is blamed for the vehicle accidents.
