Poynter Institute dean hired as NPR’s diversity VP
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The dean of faculty at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies has been named vice president of diversity in news and operations at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C.
Keith Woods will begin his new job on Feb. 1. It’s a newly created senior management position aimed at developing diversity initiatives throughout NPR.
The 51-year-old Woods has been with The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg since 1995. Before joining Poynter, Woods spent 16 years at The Times-Picayune in Louisiana.
Poynter is owned by the St. Petersburg Times newspaper. Stephen Buckley, publisher of the Times’ Web site, has taken a 10-week leave to fill Woods’ position as the school evaluates how best to handle his departure.
