Michelle Obama was looking stunning in a strapless silver-sequined, cream-colored gown while welcoming Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Mrs. Gursharan Kaur to the first state dinner held by her husband’s administration, Tuesday night. Her floor-length cut gorgeous evening wear was designed by Indian-born designer Naeem Khan.

Khan’s objective was to dress the first lady in something Indian, chic, simple but very glamorous. The gown took 40 people three weeks to complete at the designer’s family workshop in India, Khan told CNN

Naeem Khan has been on the fashion scene since 2003. His signatures are ethnic embroideries, dazzling colors, and bold embellishments. He has outfitted youthful celebrities such as Beyonc, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Lopez. He has also dressed dignitaries like Queen Noor and designed the costumes for the 2006 movie “Dreamgirls.”

Yesterday’s sophisticated, luxurious look of Mrs. Obama, was totally different from the playful, accessible, less-polished clothing she’s worn so far. Her choice of Khan as designer is also characteristic of this first lady, who often favors little-known artisans over big names.

According to Mary Tomer, author of the new book “Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy”, Michelle Obama was looking fabulous yesterday. She wore a matching wrap, a stack of bangle bracelets on her wrist and dangling earrings while sparkling in Naeem Khan’s costume.
