NEW YORK — The following stocks were among those that moved substantially or traded heavily Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange:
NYSE:
MBIA Inc., down $1.28 at $3.52
Heavy losses in mortgage-related securities and derivatives, alongside lower insurance premiums, drove the bond insurer to a third-quarter loss.
Beazer Homes USA Inc., up 41 cents at $5.10
A “moderation” in the weak housing market, improving profit margins and a slight rise in new orders helped the homebuilder post a profit.
American International Group Inc., up $1.41 at $37.59
Credit-ratings agency Moody’s Investor Service said the troubled insurer should be able to repay aid from the federal goverment in full: $122.3 billion as of Sept. 30.
Carter’s Inc., down $2.18 at $21.86
The children’s clothing maker will restate financial results for the fiscal years 2004 through 2008, and the quarters between Sept. 29, 2007 and July 4, 2009.
Sprint Nextel Corp., down 19 cents at $3.24
The wireless carrier will invest nearly $1.2 billion in nationwide wireless data network Clearwire Corp., of which it owns 51 percent. It will also cut up to 2,500 jobs.
NASDAQ:
Priceline.com Inc., up $30.49 at $204.22
Shares of the online travel service hit a nine-year high on a strong outlook as more customers book airfare and hotel rooms through its site.
Electronic Arts Inc., down $1.24 at $18.29
The video game maker announced a $725 million acqusition as it cut its payroll by 17 percent, laying off 1,500 people, while it posted a deeper second-quarter loss.
Fossil Inc., up $2.61 at $31.52
Profit dropped overall, but sales improved at the watch maker’s company-owned stores, prompting it to raise its guidance for the year.
