76ers, Jordan reach agreement for coaching job

The Philadelphia 76ers have found their next head coach, reaching an agreement in principle with Eddie Jordan to end a search that lasted nearly three weeks.

Jordan was offered the job on Friday and made the decision later that night to coach the Eastern Conference playoff team. He becomes the 22nd coach in franchise history and third since the start of last season.

Jordan, fired by the Washington Wizards in November, was one of two candidates that interviewed twice with Sixers president Ed Stefanski.

The Wizards owe Jordan nearly $4 million next season and would have to pay the difference on the contract from Jordan’s new team. The length of the contract and Jordan’s salary were not immediately known.

Jordan is 230-288 in coaching stints with the Wizards and the Sacramento Kings.

Jordan played at Rutgers and has ties with Stefanski from their four seasons together with the New Jersey Nets. Jordan was an assistant when the Nets played in two straight NBA finals and Stefanski served in various positions in the organization including general manager.

“I saw firsthand the immense impact Eddie Jordan had in helping the Nets reach two NBA finals and as the head coach in Washington, he consistently put his teams in a position to win on a nightly basis,” Stefanski said in a statement. “He embodies all the qualities I was looking for in the next head coach of the Sixers and we are very excited to have him in Philadelphia.”

Jordan did not immediately respond to phone and text messages.

“We had had some tremendous success together,” Jordan said before his first interview with the Sixers. “There’s a lot of positives in that, a lot of hard work in that.”

Sixers assistant coach Jim Lynam was waiting for the news to become official.

“If it comes to pass, obviously I’d be happy for him,” Lynam said by phone. “Eddie Jordan’s a friend.”

Mike O’Koren, one of Jordan’s friends and former assistants, said Jordan was a perfect fit for an emerging team like the Sixers. O’Koren, who was fired along with Jordan when the Wizards got off to a 1-10 start, will likely join Jordan on the Sixers bench.

“I got a text from him saying things were moving in the right direction,” O’Koren said on Friday night. “I thought it would happen when he did communicate with me. If he gets a job, I know I have a job. He’s a good teacher.”

Philadelphia went 41-41 and was eliminated in six games by the Orlando Magic. The job has been open since Tony DiLeo stepped down on May 11 and returned to the front office. DiLeo took over when Maurice Cheeks was fired in December.

DiLeo, who led the Sixers to a 32-27 record, was given lukewarm endorsements by several Sixers players after a one-sided, season-ending loss at home in Game 6 against Orlando.

Led by a nucleus of Andre Iguodala, Elton Brand and Thaddeus Young, the Sixers have made the playoffs two straight seasons and were knocked out in the first round each time. Star point guard Andre Miller is an unrestricted free agent.

Jordan emerged as the winner among a group of candidates that included Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau, Dallas Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey and Sixers scout Chris Ford.

The Sixers also interviewed Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis and spoke with Villanova coach Jay Wright.

Even former Sixers great Charles Barkley endorsed Jordan, saying he “overachieved” with the Wizards.

Casey was the only other known candidate to interview twice with Stefanski. Stefanski, who has declined comment throughout the search, was attending the NBA draft combine in Chicago and was not expected back until the weekend.

Jordan had his first head coaching job in Sacramento from March 1997 until 1998, when he was fired after going 33-64. He was replaced by Rick Adelman, who led the Kings to eight consecutive winning seasons and playoff berths.

The Wizards fired Jordan in November early in his sixth season with the club after 197 victories and four playoff appearances.

Sir/Madam

I offer my self as an aspirant for the post NIS trained cricket coach in your esteemed institution. I successfully completed the diploma course in sports coaching in cricket from NSNIS Patiala (Punjab) with cricket as my specialty sport. Currently I am rendering my coaching services to the Alappuzha District Association.

During my school and college days I was avid cricketer. One of the greatest achievements during my playing days was to enable my College Cricket Team from the backward District of Alappuzha, to be crowned champions in the Kerala University Cricket tournament 2002-03, and selected as an all rounder in the Kerala University Cricket Team. I was one of the players instrumental in propelling the team in to the semifinal of All India Cricket Tournament at Hosur (Bangalore). These creditable achievements were rewarded by the Kerala University when they made the captain of the Kerala University team for my excellent performances on the field.

With the above credentials I think I am qualified and eligible to the post of NIS trained coach. Communication in English and communicating via body language is a soft skill I acquired during my training period at Patiala. The training helped me to be well versed with the rules of cricket and laws governing the game. My youth, energy and ability to work with youngsters and mould them in to potential cricketers will make me ideal for the job. My leadership abilities (as captain of Kerala University) will guarantee me to impart leadership qualities and maintain discipline and team spirit at all times.

In light of the above details I am offering myself as cricket coach to your educational school complex. As cricket coach, I wish to render my humble service to your prestigious institute of learning, and I solemnly assure that I will remain sincere, loyal and devoted to my wards and to the institution.

I request you to peruse my application favorably and select me to the post of cricket coach.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully
