Reports: Brazil tunnel thieves steal nearly $6M
SAO PAULO — Brazilian media report that thieves tunneled their way to a money transport firm and made off with nearly $6 million.
The G1 Web site of Brazil’s Globo TV says thieves rented a house about 100 meters (yards) away from Transnacional Transporte de Valores e Seguranca Patrimonial Ltda and stole the money Sunday afternoon, while football matches gripped the nation.
The thieves reportedly lived in the home for four months while they built the tunnel. Some security cameras at Transnacional were reportedly not turned on when the heist happened.
A spokeswoman for Sao Paulo’s state public security office could not immediately provide information about the heist. She spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with policy.
