Brazil arrests 6 suspects in $6M tunnel heist

SAO PAULO — Police have arrested six men accused of tunneling their way to nearly $6 million over the weekend while Brazil was gripped with football fever.

Police say the arrested men were found with a bag with money that had the logo of the company thieves reached by tunneling 150 meters (150 yards) from a rented house. Also seized was a vehicle that detectives believe was used by the thieves.

Tuesday’s police statement says that the arrests were made Monday night.

Authorities believe the thieves spent months tunneling to the safe of the armored car company — Transnacional Transporte de Valores e Seguranca Patrimonial Ltda.

The thieves made their getaway Sunday evening as season-ending football matches virtually shut down Brazil.
