AYACUCHO, Peru — A storm-loosened wave of mud and rocks has rolled through the streets of Ayacucho in the Peruvian Andes, killing at least eight people while destroying homes and cars.
Wednesday’s mudslide came to within a block of the central plaza in the mountain city of 150,000 people.
The city council reports Thursday that rescuers have found the bodies of six men and two women. None has yet been identified.
Senior Cabinet Minister Javier Velasquez says nine homes were demolished and 105 others damaged.
City health officials say 18 people have been injured and five remain hospitalized.
