Alexander Haig Dies at 85

San Francisco (GaeaTimes.com) – Alexander Haig passed away today at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was 85 years old. He was suffering of some complications from an infection.

Alexander Haig, popularly known as Al Haig, was four star general. The former Secretary of State also served as a top adviser to three presidents of United States. He had some of his own aspirations as a President of the United States but he never lived down television remarks that he made during the critical period after 1981.

After Ronald Reagon was shot and hospitalized in 1981 by John Hinkley’s assassination attempt, he was next in the chain of the command of the United States though there was no formal declaration of that position. He was famous for his ‘I am in charge’ comment when he was in critical condition.

After President Reagan’s assassination attempt, Alexander Haig took over for the ailing President as Secretary of State. At that time, many speculated that Haig can do something rash like pushing the nuclear button against Soviet Union. President Reagan was only sixty eight days into the office and cold war tensions were heating up wit a constant fear of World War III. Alexander Haig’s assent led to believe many that the World War III may not be far away. But fortunately it did not happen as we all know.

Alexander Haig was a very major player in his role as a American President. He was also involved with the Vietnam War information leak which is also known as ‘The Pentagon Papers’.
