NEW DELHI - A 30-year-old woman was set ablaze, allegedly by her husband and in-laws, because she was unable to conceive after nine years of marriage, police said Saturday.

Lata suffered 55 percent burn injuries and is in a critical state in a hospital.

Her husband Sanjay, 31, mother-in-law and brother-in-law have been arrested after Lata accused them of the crime in her statement to the police.

A police officer said that Lata had a tiff with her jobless husband and in-laws Friday evening and around 6.30 p.m., they set her afire in their Geeta Colony residence in east Delhi.

“The couple was married for the last nine years and their relationship soured as Lata was not able to conceive. The couple often used to quarrel as Sanjay was unemployed. On Friday, they again quarrelled over the issue and Sanjay along with his family members set her ablaze,” the officer said.
