2,000 people evacuated from Calif. seaside homes
RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Los Angeles County fire officials say at least 2,000 people have been forced to leave their seaside homes in the upscale city of Rancho Palos Verdes, fleeing a wildfire that is feeding on dry, dense brush in the steep canyons.
Fire Captain Mike Brown says about 400 firefighters and four helicopters are battling the blaze which blackened at least 75 acres Thursday night.
Brown says the flames are moving into rough and inaccessible terrain where the brush is extremely dense and dry.
TV news footage showed structures on fire and at least one entirely engulfed in flames. Brown says crews will assess damage but could not confirm if any homes were damaged or destroyed.
He says the county fire department has requested help from neighboring agencies.
