West Bengal universities sign MoUs with Chinese varsity

KOLKATA - Three leading West Bengal universities Wednesday joined hands with China’s Yunnan University to develop higher education and student exchange programmes.

Yunnan University and three leading universities of the state signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) aiming to work towards the integration of a mutually rewarding education system.

“The collaborations we are entering into will ensure that some of the programmes are started from September,” Higher Education Minister Sudarshan Roychowdhury told a seminar here.

He said the programme will emphasise and develop the study of indigenous languages of both nations.

“We’ve great regard for China. I hope this educational exchange programme will help a large number of students in both the countries.”

The MOUs were signed by Wu Jianguo, vice-president of Yunnan University, and by Calcutta University vice chancellor Suranjan Das, Rabindra Bharati University vice chancellor Karunasindhu Das and Visva Bharati University registrar Col. M.M. Mitra.

Speaking on the occasion, Yunnan province vice governor Gao Feng said: “We are working towards developing a mutually rewarding education system. This will greatly help the education industries of both the countries.

“The universities in Yunnan are very much interested to get into educational collaborations with many West Bengal universities.”
