Verizon, ConocoPhillips, Coca-Cola are big movers

NEW YORK — The following stocks were among those that moved substantially or traded heavily Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange:

NYSE:

Verizon Communications Inc., up 75 cents at $29.95

Verizon Wireless’ Droid will go on sale for $200 next week as the company taps into the growing appetite for smart phones.

ConocoPhillips, down $1.41 at $49.49

Low natural gas prices and thin margins drove profits down, but the oil company is ramping up production as crude prices jump.

International Paper Co., down 80 cents at $21.83

The company’s third-quarter profit more than doubled as a federal tax credit more than offset falling sales of cardboard box materials.

Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., up 32 cents at $19.49

The engineering and construction firm said cost-cutting boosted profits, while Goldman Sachs added it to firm’s “Conviction Buy” list.

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., down $1 at $19.02

The largest Coca-Cola bottler raised its 2009 profit forecast and said third-quarter results rose on the strength of higher prices.

General Dynamics Corp., down $1.48 at $64.30

The company said third-quarter earnings sank, but sales rose, leading the military contractor to boost its profit outlook for the year.

Beazer Homes Inc., down 56 cents at $4.26

The Commerce Department said sales of new homes dropped last month, as the effects of a temporary tax credit began to wane.

NASDAQ:

SanDisk Corp., down $1.07 at $21.62

Goldman Sachs cut its rating and predicted a mediocre performance from the chip maker’s stock over the coming months.
