New charges, rewards in drug war
WASHINGTON — The US government has filed new charges against top Mexican drug suspects and offered a total of $50 million in rewards for their capture.
The Justice Department says an updated indictment made public Monday in Washington adds the names of three alleged lieutenants of the Mexican drug cartel called “The Company” and its offshoot, Los Zetas. The Company is also known as the Gulf cartel.
Prosecutors in New York have unsealed charges accusing another man, Miguel Trevino-Morales, of being a principal leader of Los Zetas. The Zetas include former members of the Mexican military who went into the drug-smuggling business.
The government says it is offering up to $5 million apiece for information leading to the arrest of 10 people, one of whom has already been captured.
