US diplomat leaves for Asia
WASHINGTON — A senior U.S. diplomat is leaving for Asia to talk with officials about ways to implement tough United Nations sanctions meant to derail North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
The State Department says Philip Goldberg is leaving Tuesday for meetings in Singapore. He will be in Bangkok on Friday, then will travel to Seoul on Monday and then to Tokyo.
Goldberg said last week the measures against the North will continue until its government takes irreversible action to scrap its nuclear program.
The U.N. sanctions strengthened an arms embargo and authorized ship searches on the high seas to try to rein in the North’s nuclear program. They also ordered an asset freeze and travel ban on companies and individuals linked to the program.
