US proposes UN resolution ahead of nuclear meeting

UNITED NATIONS — The United States is circulating a draft U.N. resolution calling for stepped up efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

While the lengthy draft circulated Friday does not mention any country by name, it reaffirms previous Security Council resolutions that imposed sanctions on Iran and North Korea.

The U.S. hopes it will be adopted at a Security Council meeting later this month to be chaired by President Barack Obama.

The draft, obtained by The Associated Press, states that the Security Council is committed “to seek a safer world for all and to create the conditions for a world without nuclear weapons…”

Council experts immediately began discussions.
