NEW DELHI - The Lok Sabha was adjourned for half-an-hour Wednesday following uproarious scenes triggered by heated demands from MPs for a discussion on the drought situation in the country.

The issue was raised by Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav soon after the house met at 11 a.m. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party and the Left parties supported Yadav, saying the country was facing a severe drought because of poor rainfall.

The MPs got agitated and shouted slogans after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said the issue could be discussed Thursday. In view of the bedlam, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the house till 11.30 a.m.

“The agriculture minister is not present right now and the house can discuss the matter for the whole day Thursday. We are ready for a debate on the issue,” Bansal told the house. But this did not satisfy the MPs.
