UN plane crashes in Haiti with 6-10 onboard

UNITED NATIONS — A surveillance plane assigned to the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti crashed Friday near the border with the Dominican Republic with 6 to 10 military personnel on board, the United Nations said.

U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said the Uruguayan plane went down in rugged terrain west of Fonds-Verrettes.

Rescue teams have been sent to the area on foot, because there are no roads in the area. It was not known whether there were any survivors.

The 9,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force has been in Haiti since a 2004 rebellion ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
