Tropical Storm Hilda swirls far out in Pacific

MIAMI — The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Hilda is swirling far out in the Pacific.

Hilda is the eighth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season. It has maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (65 kph).

On Saturday evening, it was about 1,980 miles (3,185 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja, California, peninsula and 1,175 miles (1,895 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. It is moving west at 9 mph and is not currently threatening land. It is not expected to strengthen over the next few days.

Meanwhile, in the Atlantic, Hurricane Bill is swirling off the New England coast of the U.S. with maximum sustained winds near 85 mph (140 kph).
