HYDERABAD - Two small children accompanied their elders fleeing from their village to save themselves from the surging flood waters, but could not escape death.

A country boat, in which 11 people tried to make it to a safe place, capsized in the flood waters in Pataedla Lanka village in Avanigadda mandal of flood-hit Krishna district in coastal Andhra. While nine people either swam to safety or were rescued by divers, two small children drowned.

Officials said despite their repeated appeals over the last two days, the villagers had not moved out from the village and when they finally did, it proved tragic for them.

Pataedla Lanka is one of several island villages known as Lanka villages in Krishna district inundated by the unprecedented floods in the Krishna river. The villages are located on the islands of the river near the place where the river drains into the Bay of Bengal.
