The road to votes

NEW DELHI - Senior Congress leader Krishna Tirath was baffled when a group of women supporters in Delhi gave her an ultimatum - ‘Make the road if you want our vote’!
A horde of women from Mundka area in Northwest Delhi constituency, where she is a candidate in the Lok Sabha elections, marched up to her after she addressed a block level meeting.
‘We are your supporters. The road here is in a pathetic condition - Make the road, then we will vote,’ they chorused.
Tirath replied: ‘I’ll see what I can do - just vote for me first.’
The women weren’t pleased and tailed her as she walked through the Jat community-dominated area for 10 minutes. Their voices got louder, drowning out the Congress party worker’s slogans of ‘Jai ho’.4
As Tirath left, a woman whispered: ‘She had better get the job done’. Another said: ‘She is a woman, so we will go easy this time.’
