MIAMI — The Miami Herald reports it has chosen its first woman and its first Hispanic journalist to become the editorial page editor.
Myriam Marquez was born in Havana, Cuba. She is a metro columnist for the newspaper and she succeeds Joe Oglesby, who is retiring. She will phase into the position over the next month.
She joined the Orlando Sentinel as an editorial writer in 1987 and came to the Herald in 2005 as a metro desk editor.
Marquez will lead a staff of three writers and a political cartoonist. She will also continue to write a column each week.
Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal said Thursday: “She listens, she reports deeply and she has something to say…. She is a Miami story in many ways.”
