Tentative deal reached in Oakland Univ. strike
ROCHESTER, Mich. — Facing a possible back-to-work order by a judge later in the day, a tentative three-year agreement was reached early Thursday morning that will send striking professors back to the their classrooms at a suburban Detroit university.
A statement posted on Oakland University’s Web site says terms of the deal won’t be available until its ratified by the American Association of University Professors, but fall semester classes are expected to begin Thursday morning.
Professors have been on strike since Sept. 3, the day classes were set to begin for the students at the university in Rochester, about 20 miles north of Detroit. The union authorized a walkout after the university proposed a three-year wage freeze along with cuts in health-insurance benefits.
