False comfort: US pulls report that minimized cancer risk from toxic water at Marine base

In an about-face, the government Tuesday disavowed a 12-year-old federal report that found little or no cancer risk for adults who lived on a Marine base where drinking water was contaminated for three decades.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Thousands of veterans were at first shocked to learn they should get blood tests for HIV and hepatitis because three hospitals might have treated them with unsterile equipment. Now, just a couple of months after the Department of Veterans Affairs issued the dire warnings, veterans are growing frustrated by the lack of information from the tightlipped federal agency.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Department of Veterans Affairs says a fourth person exposed to dirty equipment at its hospitals has tested positive for HIV.
