Scientists work out formula to forecast tsunami

WASHINGTON - Now tsunamis won’t be able to catch you unaware, thanks to a mathematics formula worked out by scientists that will give advance warnings and an idea of their destructive might.

BHUBANESWAR - An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale Thursday rocked parts of Orissa and Jharkhand, the meteorological office here said.

An undersea volcano in Tonga is sending out volumes of smoke & ash thousands of feet in to the air. A series of earthquakes rocked Tonga, a 170 island archipelago between Australia and Tahiti. The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale on Friday.  A 5.2 magnitude after shock was also recorded 2 hours prior to the initial quake.
The sudden volcanic eruptions followed by the earthquake prompted the local authorities to issue a Tsunami alert for Tonga and neighboring islands. Tonga and the adjoining islands are a part of the “ring of fire”, an arc of volcanic and earthquake prone islands in the pacific.

Earthquake jolts Indonesia’s Sumatra Island

HONG KONG - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale Wednesday jolted the southern part of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, the Hong Kong Observatory reported.
