PATIALA/CHANDIGARH - Newly appointed Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal made a political statement during Republic Day celebrations Monday by unfurling the national flag in Patiala, the hometown of former Congress chief minister Amarinder Singh.

The differences between the Badal family and Amarinder Singh are well known in Punjab’s political circles.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal unfurled the national flag at the Sikh holy city of Amritsar.

In Chandigarh, a march-past and a colourful cultural programme was organised in the Panjab University campus. Vice Chancellor R.C. Sobti called upon everyone to shun complacence in every field of life so that the country could progress faster.
