Police: Suicide bomber kills 11 at mosque in Iraq

BAGHDAD — A suicide bomber opened fire on worshippers Friday at a mosque in northern Iraq and then blew himself up, killing 11 people and wounding 42, police and hospital officials said.

The attacker fired shots from AK-47 rifle at a Sunni mosque in the city of Tal Afar, a local police official said. When the shooter ran out of ammunition, he detonated his explosives belt, the official said.

An official with the Tal Afar hospital confirmed the casualty count. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media.

Tal Afar, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) east of the Syrian border in Ninevah province, has been the scene of a number of horrific insurgent attacks.

In July, a coordinated attack by two suicide bombers killed 38 people there.
