Sri Lanka says 2 rebel officials surrender
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka’s military says that two Tamil Tiger rebels officials have surrendered to its advancing troops in the northern war zone.
Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara says the rebels’ former media spokesman and an interpreter for the insurgents’ political wing turned themselves over to the army Wednesday.
Both the officials played prominent roles in talking to the media and visiting foreign diplomats during a now-defunct peace process mediated by Norway.
Nanayakkara says the former spokesman is the most senior rebel official to surrender so far.
