Ships collide near Singapore port; no injuries

SINGAPORE — Two freight ships collided Thursday near Singapore’s port, grounding one of the vessels for repairs, the port authority said.

The 14-ton Iranian-registered freighter Danoosh carrying maize collided with a 3-ton Indonesian container ship a few miles (kilometers) off Singapore’s coast, the Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement.

The Iranian ship, with a crew of 33, reported damage to a cargo hold and was taken to shallow water for repair, while the Indonesian ship had minor damage and continued its voyage, the authority said.

The Iranian ship could be seen lying low in the water.

There was no report of injury or spill, and operations at the port, the world’s busiest, were unaffected, the authority said, adding it was investigating the cause of the collision.
