Attacks on Guatemalan police kill 2, wound 3

GUATEMALA CITY — A series of attacks on police in Guatemala has killed two officers and wounded three.

Interior Minister Raul Velasquez says the attacks appear to be retaliation by criminals, but did not point to a specific gang.

He says the government will not be “intimidated.”

The two dead officers were gunned down Thursday in a rough, low-income neighborhood of Guatemala City.

In addition, two officers were shot and wounded as they stood guard outside a school, while a third was hurt in a later shooting. A grenade tossed at a police station failed to explode in a fourth attack.

Last month, four prison officials were shot to death in apparent retaliation for a crackdown on an extortion ring operating from behind bars.
