Sensex down 48 points as stock markets turn volatile

MUMBAI - Indian equities were trading in volatile zone Friday, with a key index 48 points down early afternoon.

At 1.25 p.m., the sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened lower at 16,650.05 points, was down 48.67 points or 0.29 percent at 16,662.44 points.

Around the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading in the negative terrain at 4,944.55 points, down 0.42 percent.

Broader market indices were trading mixed, with the BSE midcap index ruling 0.03 percent lower but the BSE smallcap index up 0.59 percent.
