Senate panel endorses Asia ambassador nominees
WASHINGTON — A U.S. Senate panel has endorsed Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman as U.S. ambassador to China.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday also endorsed campaign fundraiser and lawyer John Roos as top diplomat to Japan.
President Barack Obama’s nominations now go to the full Senate for a vote. It was unclear when that would happen.
Huntsman, a Chinese-speaking Republican, is a former ambassador to Singapore and has led trade missions to China.
Roos is a California technology lawyer who reportedly collected at least $500,000 for Obama’s presidential campaign.
