Clinton urges restoration of order in Honduras
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the United States believes the unrest in Honduras “has evolved into a coup” and that officials believe the situation needs close watching.
Clinton said Monday a delegation from the Organization of American States will be heading to Honduras as early as Tuesday “to begin working with the parties” on the restoration of constitutional government there.
U.S. diplomats have been working to ensure the safety of deposed Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and his family as they press for restoration of constitutional law and his presidency. Clinton said “it’s important that we stand for the rule of law.”
Clinton said the U.S. will continue working with the Organization of American States on the problem in Central America and said people need to “address the underlying problems that led to yesterday’s events.”
She said the United States is looking at its aid program for the country and “considering the implications of it” for continued assistance.
