NY woman convicted for role in body parts scheme
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An upstate New York woman who helped illegally remove bone and tissue from corpses in 2005 has been convicted on 103 counts.
Kirssy Medos, formerly known as Kirssy Knapp, ran the Brighton office of now-closed Biomedical Tissue Services. The New Jersey company harvested bone and tissue from bodies being prepared for cremation. The body parts were sold to tissue processors for use in medical procedures.
Medos and six others were charged in Monroe County with illegally taking tissue from 36 bodies at three funeral homes.
On Friday, 31-year-old Medos was found guilty of dozens of charges of body-stealing, opening graves, unlawful dissection of a human body and falsifying business records.
She faces up to 20 years in prison when she’s sentenced next month.
