RI picks Chevron for town wind turbine project

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island has selected Chevron Energy Solutions to develop and maintain several wind turbines in the coastal town of Narragansett.

Chevron beat out three other firms seeking the project and is not seeking any money from the state or the town for its proposal. The exact number and location of the turbines have not been determined.

Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR’-ee) on Tuesday called Chevron a “proven leader in renewable energy.”

The town and state surveyed Narragansett residents last summer about the proposed wind turbines. The state says more than three-quarters of those who responded to the survey said they felt positively about the project.

The turbines are separate from a larger, first-in-the-nation wind farm the state has proposed building miles off Block Island.
