WASHINGTON — Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who has struggled with addiction and depression for much of his life, has checked into an undisclosed medical facility for treatment.

The Rhode Island Democrat said in a statement Friday that his recovery is a “lifelong process” and that he will do whatever it takes to preserve his health.

The son of Sen. Edward Kennedy crashed his car on Capitol Hill in May 2006 and entered into a rehabilitation program.
