Qatar to supply extra LNG to India

NEW DELHI - Qatar will this year increase its supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India, the nation’s Oil Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah said here Tuesday.
Qatar will sell ‘extra LNG cargoes this year’, the minister told reporters on the sidelines of the Petrotech 2009 conference.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Qatar in November 2008 had lobbied for an additional 2.5 million tonnes of LNG for India on a long-term contract.
‘India is our single largest customer. Last year, we had sold extra cargoes (beyond the long-term contract) and this year we will attempt to send more,’ Hamad al-Attiyah said.
Qatar is likely to send six cargoes from February.
Qatar currently sells 5 million tonnes of LNG to Petronet LNG a year and an additional 2.5 million tonnes would be supplied under the same contract in the latter half in 2009.
