ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Sher Azam was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the country’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Sunday, the police said.

The leader was attacked when he was returning home after shopping with family members in Haripur City, 65 km north of Islamabad, the police said. Azam succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

Sher Azam was a protocol officer in the government of former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Azam’s wife, two children and a woman relative were injured in the attack.

The gunmen fled after the firing. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

The case is currently being investigated.

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif condemned the murder and demanded arrest of the killers. On Saturday, a leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Lahore city, the capital of Punjab province, where the PML-N is a ruling party.
