NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday greeted the nation on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, saying the monk’s message of peace and non-violence had become even more relevant in today’s world.

‘Lord Mahavir’s life and philosophy inspire all of us to lead a life of compassion, sacrifice and non-violence,’ the prime minister said in his message.

‘His message of peace and non-violence provides hope for mankind and has become even more relevant in today’s world.’

Lord Mahavir is the 24th and last Tirthankara, according to Jain philosophy. A Tirthankara is an enlightened soul who is born as a human being and attains perfection through intense meditation.
