Police report gunfire in Pakistani city

ISLAMABAD — Police say gunmen have attacked a mosque close to army headquarters in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi.

Police official Waqas Ahmed says gunfire was continuing Friday in the area. At least one explosion was also heard.

The attack is the latest in a series to rock Pakistan in recent months as the government presses an offensive against al-Qaida and the Taliban in the northwest.

There was no immediate word on casualties.
