Court rejects Ahmed’s bail application
LAHORE, Pakistan — A Pakistani court on Wednesday rejected a bail application by former test cricketer Ijaz Ahmed.
“We have not received the detailed judgment, but yes our (bail) application was today rejected,” Ahmed’s lawyer, Kashif Javed, told The Associated Press.
Ahmed, 40, has been accused of issuing checks worth more than $130,000 without sufficient funds to cover them.
Judge Naeem Iqbal heard the bail application in the eastern city of Lahore.
Earlier this month, a civil court also rejected Ahmed’s bail application.
Javed said after studying Wednesday’s detailed judgment, he plans to move another bail application in a high court.
Ahmed was arrested March 26 for allegedly writing checks to two property dealers that were dishonored.
Ahmed played 60 tests and scored 3,315 runs for Pakistan before retiring in 2001. He was also a member of Pakistan’s World Cup-winning squad in 1992 and scored 6,564 runs in 250 limited-overs internationals.
