CHANDIGARH - Over 3,500 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) were seized here Wednesday, while they were being smuggled into Punjab, police said.

‘It was during our regular search drive in which we arrested Darshan Singh, a resident of Patiala while carrying 3,576 bottles of IMFL in his Tata-407. He was driving the vehicle with a fake registration number of Chandigarh,’ Jagbir Singh, deputy superintendent of police (operation cell) told IANS.

Jagbir Singh added: ‘Police have started investigations. Based on our interrogation, we are expecting to arrest more people involved in the smuggling of liquor from here.’

Smuggling of liquor from Chandigarh to other states is quite rampant as the excise duty and other taxes on liquor are fairly low here as compared to the neighbouring states.
